Ingredients

Vegetables

  • 2 small small sweet onions

Dry mix

  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour

Seasonings

  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Wet mix

  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 cup milk

Misc

  • Cooking spray

Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat air fryer to 375°F (190°C).
  • Peel onions and trim the tops; cut into quarters, leaving the root intact so petals hold together.
  • Mix flour, paprika, garlic powder, salt, and pepper in a bowl until evenly combined.
  • Whisk egg and milk in another bowl until smooth.
  • Coat each onion in the flour mixture, then dip in the egg mixture, and coat again in flour to make a light double crust.
  • Place onions in the air fryer basket in a single layer and spray lightly with cooking spray.

Cooking

  • Cook for 10-12 minutes until golden and crispy, turning once if needed for even browning.
  • Serve immediately with your favorite dipping sauce.

Notes

Don't slice too deep; keep the root intact so petals stay together while cooking. Spray lightly but evenly with cooking spray to promote browning without excess oil. Cook in a single layer with space between onions for best crisping. Reheat leftovers in the air fryer at 350°F for 3-4 minutes to restore crispness. For a sweet finish, pair with a light dessert like an easy flourless oatmeal carrot cake.
