Equipment

  • Stand mixer
  • Wax paper
  • Plastic wrap
  • Baking sheets
  • Parchment paper
  • Wire rack

Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 cups Flour
  • 1 teaspoon Baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon Salt
  • 1 cup Powdered sugar
  • 1/2 cup Granulated sugar
  • 1 cup Unsalted butter (cut into chunks)
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla extract
  • as needed Red food coloring
  • as needed Valentine's Day colored sprinkles

Instructions

  • Mix flour, baking powder, salt, and sugars in a stand mixer, then add butter and vanilla until a dough forms.
  • Divide the dough, color one half with red food coloring, and roll each portion out between wax paper.
  • Chill the rolled dough layers in the refrigerator for at least one hour.
  • Stack the colored dough on the uncolored layer, trim edges, and roll into a jelly-roll shape.
  • Roll the dough log in sprinkles, wrap in plastic, and chill or freeze.
  • Slice the dough and bake at 350°F for 10 to 12 minutes until golden brown.
  • Cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack.

Notes

If the dough is too wet from food coloring, add an extra tablespoon of flour. Ensure the dough is chilled before rolling the layers together. Trim the dough layers to the same size for a uniform swirl appearance; excess dough can be used for additional cookies. The recipe can be adapted for different occasions by changing food coloring and sprinkles. Vanilla extract can be substituted with mint or almond extract.
