Ingredients

  • 1 cup 2 sticks unsalted butter
  • 1 ½ cups packed brown sugar
  • ¼ cup apple butter
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp ground nutmeg
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 2 medium apples peeled & sliced thin
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 2 tbsp browned butter
  • 3 tbsp maple syrup
  • ½ cup powdered sugar

Instructions

  • Melt the butter in a saucepan over medium heat until golden and nutty, with brown bits at the bottom. Let cool slightly.
  • Whisk in brown sugar. Stir in apple butter, vanilla, and eggs until smooth.
  • Fold in flour, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt just until combined.
  • Toss apple slices with 1 tbsp brown sugar and 1 tsp cinnamon.
  • Line a square baking dish with parchment. Spread in the batter and press apple slices on top.
  • Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 35–40 minutes, until the center looks just set.
  • While baking, brown 2 tbsp of butter again. Whisk with maple syrup and powdered sugar until creamy.
  • Drizzle glaze over cooled bars. Let soak in, then slice into thick chewy squares.

Notes

Use crisp apples like Honeycrisp or Pink Lady. Add pecans or walnuts for crunch. Cool completely before slicing for clean cuts.
