Equipment

  • large oven-safe skillet or Dutch oven
  • Whisk
  • 9x13 baking dish (if not using skillet)
  • meat thermometer (optional)

Ingredients

  • 2 pounds ground beef (80/20 blend) Use 80/20 for optimal flavor and moisture.
  • ½ cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • 1 medium onion, finely diced
  • 2 teaspoons salt Adjust seasoning to taste.
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth (low sodium preferred)
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 large onion, sliced
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder

Instructions

  • Combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, beaten egg, diced onion, salt, and pepper in a large bowl and shape into 6-8 oval patties.
  • Brown the patties in an oven-safe skillet for 3-4 minutes on each side, then set aside.
  • In the same skillet, melt butter and sauté sliced onions until softened, then add flour and stir for 2 minutes before whisking in beef broth and cream.
  • Return the browned patties to the gravy, cover tightly, and bake at 350°F for 45 minutes, then uncover and bake for an additional 15 minutes.
  • Let the dish rest for 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

Browning the patties enhances the flavor. Whisk the gravy continuously to avoid lumps, and let the casserole rest after baking for the best consistency.
