Description

There’s nothing quite like the cozy smell of apples and cinnamon bubbling away in your kitchen. This homemade apple pie filling is sweet, spiced, and glossy the kind of comfort no canned version can touch. Perfect for pies, pancakes, or spooning straight from the pot, it’s pure fall happiness.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 tbsp butter
  • 6 Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored, and sliced ¼-inch thick
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • ½ tsp apple pie spice (or extra cinnamon/nutmeg)
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • ¾ cup water
  • 2 tbsp cornstarch
  • 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar

Instructions

  1. Peel, core, and slice apples evenly to ¼-inch thickness.
  2. Melt butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add apples and coat with butter.
  3. Sprinkle in sugars, cinnamon, apple pie spice, and salt. Cook until apples begin to soften.
  4. In a measuring cup, whisk together water, cornstarch, and apple cider vinegar until smooth.
  5. Pour slurry into skillet, stirring immediately. Let bubble until sauce thickens and coats the apples.
  6. Remove from heat and let cool slightly before using in a pie crust or serving as a topping.

Notes

For thicker filling, simmer a few extra minutes. Mix apple varieties like Honeycrisp or Fuji for extra flavor. This filling is also incredible spooned over oatmeal, waffles, or vanilla ice cream.
